Mike Singletary already has been an NFL head coach and interviewed recently for the Bears head coaching job which eventually went to Marc Trestman.

Singletary knows African-American coaches historically don’t get second chances as often as their white peers, Mark Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports, he isn’t making excuses and, as always, tries to maintain an optimistic perspective about his future.

There were 15 head-coaching and GM vacancies this offseason, and all of them were filled by white men. The Fritz Pollard Alliance, which works with the NFL to measure and promote minority hiring, sent a letter to the league that suggested the Rooney Rule be expanded to cover offensive- and defensive-coordinator openings, as well as assistant head coaches, right now, the rule requires teams to interview minorities only for head-coaching and GM vacancies.

‘‘We believe pipeline issues are a part of the reason we’ve seen a reduction in head coaches of color over the past few years, and this expansion will diversify the head-coaching pipeline,’’ the Fritz Pollard Alliance said in its letter, according to NFL.com.

Singletary, though, wasn’t alarmed or disappointed.

‘‘I just believe there are a lot of guys out there that are worthy,’’ Singletary said, referring to minority candidates. ‘‘But there are also some white coaches out there who are worthy who don’t get interviews. So it goes both ways.’’

‘‘It was great to be interviewed,’’ Singletary said. ‘‘But hopefully, in the near future, it’ll happen again.’’

Oh my god this crap is so ignorant. He was a crapty head coach. If he was white, he would still have been a crapty head coach. If he honestly believes him being black has anything to do with him not getting another job, he is straight up stupid. And so is anyone else that uses their skin color as an excuse.

I respect the guy a lot but his first stint didn't go so well. Didn't he pull down his pants in front of the team after a loss? :icon_rolleyes:

I still believe he can be a good coach. I just think he needs to stick with being a LB's coach. That's what he knows and what he's good at. My .02

Only reason a minority should be upset about the head coach hiring process is that some are having their time wasted simply to satisfy the Rooney rule, with no intention of actually hiring the minority candidate.

Didn't he say that he wasn't pissed and he understood that there were more qualified candidates out there and that white coaches get screwed too? Am I missing something? The guys a prominent black man who was interviewed and passed on so of course they'd ask him what he thought. Just don't understand the crucifixion of Mike.

Because it's easier to assume the guy is whining rather than actually reading the post/full article/interview.

I read it all. My post was more the result of all of this stupid Rooney rule crap getting to me. It was directed at singletary simply because he's the subject of the article. He was a bad coach at San Francisco, and now these people are trying to blame him not getting a job on the fact that he's black. I never said he was whining or using it as an excuse for himself. I said anyone who does is stupid.
