The Rooney Rule is about to get its first major revision. The rule requiring minority candidates to be interviewed for high-profile NFL positions was followed without fail as eight head coaches and seven general managers recently were hired. What NFL commissioner Roger Goodell finds unsatisfactory is that not one of those 15 jobs was filled by a non-white candidate, calling the results “simply not acceptable.†“We didn't have the outcomes that we wanted, and the outcomes are to make sure that we have full diversity throughout our coaching ranks, throughout our executive ranks and throughout the league office,†Goodell said Friday during his state of the league news conference at the Super Bowl. “It's very important to the success of the league to do that, and we're committed to finding those solutions.†That likely means the first revamping of a rule that took effect 10 years ago and is named for Steelers chairman Dan Rooney, who pushed for its passage. Goodell did not explain what tweaking might be done. “We have to look to see what the next generation of the Rooney Rule is,†Goodell said. “What's going to take us to another level? We're committed to finding that answer.†Source: Tribune-Review
I dont see what else they could do to get the results they want, short of assigning the coaches to the vacancies themselves. "Okay Cleveland, you just fired your OC. We're a little light on Latinos this year, so youre getting Ron Rivera. Yes, we know he is a defensive coach, but rules are rules."
Agree! So if you’re not a minority and more qualified you can’t have the job because you are not the right nationality? I thought this type of thing had disappeared back in the 80's.
I wonder how the "NFL caliber" pool of coaches breaks down by race as a group. Hard to quantify the first part so a breakdown would be hard to arrive at, but for HC say NFL experience (and success) as a coordinator or super hotshot position coach at minimum, and/or a high level of successful D1 NCAA HC experience. Just taking a shot in the dark but I'd feel confident in guessing thats a field dominated by caucasians, with other races represented at a percentage that probably corresponds pretty closely to their actual representation in the NFL coaching ranks. I dont feel like theres some disproportionate amount of qualified minority coaches out there getting looked over for less qualified white dudes. Thats just the way it is. You want to change that, start a program to get ex-players (from any level of ball) into entry level gigs, high school, JC and D2 programs, and let them work their way up like everyone else. Maybe even some kind of "coach school" to get them going, have current and ex NFL coaches come in and school them up on systems and schemes and player management, and get them jobs after theyve completed it. Help to increase the talent pool at the lower levels and it will naturally work its way upward over time. Affirmative action surely helped some people out, but it also made a lot of people extremely resentful and diminished the accomplishments of a lot of deserving minorities, because qualified or not they were often viewed as an AA hire forced on the business rather than the best person for the job. It would be the same thing here.
Great idea that can make finding a HC more interesting and make the NFL more money. Take all the coaches that want to be HC's put them a octagon and let them duke it out. Winner gets to pick what team he wants to coach and everyone else gets whats left over. Make it pay per view and have the proceeds go to all the ex-NFL players who have problems from past concussions. Kill two birds with one stone.
no offense to the nfl and the nflpa, but to me,fixing the problems the league's players have is way more important than setting diameters for hgh testing will ever be! I Can't believe that they have not addressed the DUI problem and what hey are doing to fix it 1 time this week at the super bowl! and i'm all for tweaking the rooney rule, but should'nt the person who is mostly qualified always get the job regardless of color? I Think the biggest problem they have over all others is the DUI problem with the league's players, and i think they should fix that before addressing anything else!
