The 49ers have no plans to keep Alex Smith, but before they're forced to cut ties with the first-overall pick in the 2005 draft, they'd gladly listen to trade offers. The thinking is twofold: first, it would be nice to get something for the former starter. Second, the 49ers would have some say in where Smith ended up, which wouldn't be the case if he became a free agent. If the latter does happen, ESPN's John Clayton has a theory on how things could play out. "…I would have to think that if (Smith is) released, he'll make a beeline to Arizona and compete against the 49ers two times a year for the next several years," Clayton said during an appearance Thursday on Arizona Sports 620 (via ArizonaSports.com). "Knowing that the 49ers probably don't want (Smith to go to a division foe)," Clayton continued, "the best thing to do is hang on to him and see if you can trade him to an AFC team, maybe the Cleveland Browns -- I think the Browns would be the most interested." well, obviously the niners don't want to help make the cards better. however, clayton goes on to say that the browns would be the most interested team in the afc but i'm not sure he is going to fit their new offense.
Browns still don't make any sense to me at all, and that's not even because I don't want him myself. It's not a fit with what they want to do.
I don't see how he doesn't fit. Turner coached him and made him look legit when he still god awful. Turner is a guy who knows how to use players. He fits his system around a QB. In Dallas he had starts from Aikman, Beurline, Walsh and Peete all different QBs and he knee how to call a game with them. He coached Brees his first stint in SD as OC and Rivers as HC, both completly different QBs Sent from my HTC Vivid
Let him go to AZ Thats a good way for our defense to pad their stats. He won't fit Arians loves the Deep ball Smith struggles with that.
