Stephen Jones, the team’s executive vice president, said Wednesday that the franchise would like to give Romo an extension to “reward†someone they consider to be a “great quarterback,†Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News reports.

“I think on this particular situation with Tony is we think we have a great quarterback and we want him to be our quarterback here for the next 4-5 years,†Jones told 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. “We’re fortunate that we have a really good quarterback, if not a great one. He deserves to be paid. He’s in the last year of his contract. Our goal is to not let our quarterback run out of contract. We have a good one here and we want to reward him.

“At the same time, when you have a good one and you’re fortunate enough to have a good one then he’s going to take up the biggest part of your cap space, so you have to be partners with one another and you have to do things. No one wants to win more, no one wants to have success more than Tony. He knows in order to do that we have to manage our cap and he plays a big part in that because the percentage of the cap that he takes.

“He wants good players around him and we want to put great players around him. And that’s what we intend to do.â€

Jones, who noted that no matter how much a team appears to be over the cap they always seem to find a way to get back under, said the Cowboys and Romo have “informally†had discussions on a new contract.

He's in the top 16 starting QBs but in no way is he great.

Well, if a deal can be worked out that's cap friendly, I think he's with the Cowboys for the next 5 years.

Hes a good qb as long as its not a big game. Maybe he will stop choking eventually theres not much out there anyway. Cant think of who could replace him.

If the Cowboys could just get some decent OL, Romo would be fine.

His a good qb, no questions asked, but his not a great one. dallas is right, they should keep him, there's no good qb's out there now except Alex Smith, his place is not with Dallas.

A tweet from Mike Fisher of 105.3 The Fan in Dallas says that there is a lot of talk going on between the Cowboys and Romo and his agent. Stay tuned.

Anyone want to hazard a guess on what his next contract will be? Maybe something like 5-6 years, 75-90 million?

I don't know about the dollar amount, but I think the length will be at least 5 years.

I heard it could be dual-type contract and if he wins a Super Bowl or certain playoff games, it could escalate into a Flacco-esque type deal.

I'm all about the incentive based contract. Lets hope they work something like that out.

Ya, if he signs I dont think he'll sniff the reported amount unless he wins big

Dallas also needs an out in the deal in the next few years considering his age. Romo can't keep them from taking a goof QB prospect if one falls into there laps.

If the Cowboys and Romo can work something out before the deadline this afternoon, they can have $8 million to spend in FA. As of 7:30 AM, the Cowboys were $200,000 under the salary cap, according to Mike Fisher of 105.3 The Fan.
