NFL analyst Ed Werder joined Fitzsimmons and Durrett on KESN-FM 103.3 to talk about the Cowboys. Here are some highlights.

On if the Cowboys will extend Tony Romo before March 12:

“I had always believed that would be the case, but the closer we get to the date and given the fact that so far this nothing but denials when you ask if the negotiations have even begun yet, I would have to say that seems unlikely. What that tells me based on the fact that the Cowboys are back over the cap again with the Anthony Spencer deal is that they will not be heavily involved in the first portion of free agency. Therefore, you can expect that they will be looking for guys that have been passed over by teams that do have money.â€

On why there is no sense of urgency to extend Romo:

“I think for Romo’s crew wanted to wait and see where the Joe Flacco contract fell. I know that late in the season, believe it or not, the people who are working with Romo on his deal believed they were in position to get far more than Joe Flacco was going to get. Obviously, the final month of the season completely changed that with Flacco not only having success in the playoffs but winning the Super Bowl and being the MVP. I think that certainly created a ceiling for any quarterbacks that haven’t won a Super Bowl. I think it affects not only Tony Romo but Matt Ryan’s deal with the Falcons. It doesn’t affect what Aaron Rodgers is going to do with the Packers. As for why exactly this seems to be taking an eternity, we know the Cowboys are motivated to do the deal so we can only assume that Tony Romo wants more than what’s being offered to him currently.â€

Super bowl? How about just a playoff win? Or playoff birth? The dude can't do either.

I just meant that if he wants to be paid like Flacco or more, he needs a SB win. The only guys in the league who could make more than Flacco have a SB win.

Romo is a lot older with much less success then Flacco. Romo played one of the NFLs most talented teams for 4 years from 2006-2009 and has one PO win to show for it. I'm not sold that Romo will never be able win, but he doesn't deserve as much as a proven winner

well, romo is a more accomplished passer, no doubt, but winning playoff games, especially SB's, is what gets the big bucks in this league.

so, at this point, romo should make the same or less, but not more.

Agreed. Like it or not, playoff wins and SB wins = more $$$$$.
