Michael Gehlken of North County Times takes a look at the 25 Chargers players who are set to become free agents in the coming months. Their offensive line figures to see a complete makeover next season with guards Louis Vasquez and Tyronne Green set to become free agents, as well as OT Jared Gaither. Gehlken notes that it will not be easy for San Diego to get out from under Gaither’s four-year, $24.5 million contract that he signed last year because he still has $6 million his prorated signing bonus remaining. Gehlken sees the Chargers placing a first-round tender on Danario Alexander, which would practically guarantee that he’s back with the team next season and DT Antonio Garay could be released while LB Takeo Spikes will probably be allowed to leave. they really need to inject some youth into their defense. they're still playing at a 'fair' level but it may be the oldest defense in the league. they are just going to keep declining because most of those guys are past their prime. and that's just another indictment on a.j. smith. he's been using almost all of their high draft picks on defense for several years and he's still got a bunch of old farts running around out there.
