The free agent most commonly linked to the Detroit Lions has been running back Reggie Bush, but as we speculated Monday morning, the price tag associated with the safety position could allow to the Lions to pursue one of the top names on the market in that critical area of need. According to a report from ESPN.com's Adam Schefter, the Lions are one of four teams in the mix to sign San Francisco 49ers safety Dashon Goldson. Schefter went as far as to label Detroit a favorite. Goldson, 28, is the consensus best player available at his position. He's coming off two consecutive Pro Bowl seasons and was named an All-Pro by the Associated Press in 2012. Source: MLive.com
Ya #38 is a very good safety but he definitely has his down sides. Price is too steep for the 49ers and I dont blame them, especially when they have a bunch of other players they need to resign soon.
They have to decide who they're going to spend big money on with deals for Crabtree and Kaepernick coming up next year. Obviously those two are going to be the cornerstones for the offense now, and its not like SF is going to just let those two walk. They can find some really good talent in the draft if Goldson doesn't want to take a team-friendly deal. Can't blame him for wanting a top-tier contract, because he is good, is trying to take care of his family and has helped build the defense to where it is, but he needs to ask himself does he want to get a huge deal or be part of something special. Either way he's still going to be paid really well.
Goldsons good but he's hardly irreplaceable. He's a safety for crying out loud, it's not exactly a position where the talent difference between very good and pretty good is going to sink your defense. They drafted Robinson for a reason, if they are willing to let Goldson walk then they must be okay with the options behind door #2 . Goldson was a liability in coverage anyway.
He was better the last couple years than he was in years past, but I think they can find someone who can do really well and not break the bank. Now that it appears that Delanie is gone too, so they're going to have their hands full replacing him as well.
