Louisville's Kevin Ware Suffers Gruesome Compound Fracture During Regional Final Game

Louisville guard Kevin Ware suffered a gruesome compound fracture in the first half of the Cardinals' Midwest regional final against Duke on Sunday.

Ware rushed out to challenge a 3-point shot by Duke's Tyler Thornton and appeared to land awkwardly. When laying on the court, the tibia bone in his right leg appeared to be protruding from the skin. The game was stopped for a prolonged period of time and a pall fell over Lucas Oil Stadium.

This truly was a gruesome injury to see you could really see how bad by how all of the players reacted, haven't seen anything like that in basketball.

CBS halts replays of gruesome injury to Louisville's Kevin Ware | gulflive.com

After two initial replays, CBS stop showing footage Sunday of Louisville basketball player Kevin Ware breaking his leg during the first half of his team's NCAA men's tournament game against Duke.

CBS commentator Clark Kellogg described the injury was "gruesome."

"If you can bear to watch it, take a look but it's a gruesome-looking injury," Kellogg said.

CBS showed the replay twice in slow motion, although not with a close-up of Ware landing.

CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus said that because of the graphic nature of the injury, the network decided not to show it after the original replays. People could quickly find replays on YouTube, anyway.

"We did not zoom in on the injury when he was taken off," McManus said. "We did not try to highlight it. I think we did the right thing."

Rick Pitino Had More Details on Kevin Ware's Injury After the Game (Video) | Complex

Rick Pitino revealed after the Cardinals' 85-63 win over Duke that Ware's injury is similar to the one Louisville RB (Michael) Bush had in 2006. The head coach said Ware's leg is broken in two places and he'll be out for at least a year. He also offered this little tidbit, as well:

"All he kept saying‒ now remember, the bone's six inches out of his leg‒ and all he's yelling: 'Win the game, win the game.' I've not seen that in my life. We're all distraught, and all he's saying is, 'Win the game,' while the bone is out of his leg. Pretty special young man."

The scene was surreal, everyone in that place was just hushed. You just hope the doctors can do something for him so he can find a way back. That's a bad break, ugh....stomach still turns thinking about it.

"Kevin Ware underwent successful surgery at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis on Sunday night to repair a broken bone in his right leg. Ware had the bone re-set, the wound from the injury closed and a rod inserted in his right tibia during 2-hr surgery."
