Now that veteran Tyson Clabo is off the market, the Dallas Cowboys have lost a slice of leverage in their standoff with right tackle Doug Free.

The team isn't about to blink, however. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday on "Total Access" that the Cowboys are playing hardball, asking Free to take a "substantial" pay cut of more than $2 million.

Although a release will count $10 million against the salary cap, the Cowboys can apply half of that total to next year's cap if the transaction comes with a post-June 1 designation.

In short, the Cowboys are drawing out the process, realizing Free has little leverage of his own.

Nothing new on the situation. I can tell you that Free is supposed to appear at a Cowboys charity function later this week.

I predict the Cowboys keep Free and don't sign Winston. I hear that the Cowboys front office doesn't think Winston is any better than Free is.

I agree, but this is the Cowboys we're talking about. They don't always do the sensible thing.

I say no. We don't have any backup veteran Tackles if we cut Free. We are already thin at the position. Cutting Free would just make a really bad situation worse IMO. I say we are stuck with this pile of dung. We just need to make the best of it.

Parnell is better than free and is not dung.

Plus we save 7 mil. He's scheduled to make 10 mil way too much for half as job

My only fear is that we are really lean at RT. We don't have that many on the roster. I would much rather over pay for Free and have Parnell as well then to put all our chips in one basket with only Parnell. My fear is what if we cut Free and Parnell gets hurt? Then we rely on UFA's or some scrub off the street.

If I'm not mistaken Bernadue can play both positions tackle and guard.

So we wouldn't just have Parnell

I'm sure Tyron Smith can play Center too.. But it wouldn't be ideal. That's all i am trying to say. Personally, I would feel more comfortable with some real depth at the position. If we plan on having any success this year we need our line to be better, and to be better we need depth. my .02

I really wish Jerry Meatwhistle Jones wouldn't have signed Free to that huge contract. Just like the Roy Williams deal.. We are paying the price in the long run. smh

It's easy to look at it in hindsight, but at the time Free had just had a season where he played at a top 10 LT level and re-upping him was a no brainer. Every Cowboy fan would have jumped off the cliff at the time if we let Free walk back then

I heard this morning that the Cowboys want Free to sign a deal in the neighborhood of $3-3.5 million dollars.
