Jack Butler, a Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback from the 1950s who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012, died Saturday morning at 85. Butler entered UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh in November due to a staph infection, which developed from a leg injury that ended his career in 1959. The infection attacked an artificial knee replacement, according to his son, Mike. "His heart just stopped," Mike Butler said, via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "He was completely lucid last night, my sister and brother made him a root beer float and he went to sleep. He never complained, never said anything hurt." Butler ended his nine-year NFL career ranked second all-time in interceptions with 52, four of which he returned for a touchdown. In 103 games, the dynamic playmaker also tallied four scoring receptions and returned a fumble for a touchdown. The Steelers and the Rooney family issued their condolences through a statement Saturday. "His family was very close to the entire Rooney family, and he will be missed. Our condolences are with his family through this very tough time," team chairman Dan Rooney said. Source: NFL.com
