A cross-country flight, little sleep and more weather woes didn't stop Phil Mickelson from a memorable day at Merion Golf Club. The five-time U.S. Open runner-up, who returned to California earlier in the week to be at his daughter's 8th-grade graduation and didn't get back to suburban Philadelphia until the wee hours on Thursday morning, shot 3-under-par 67 on Thursday to find himself atop the leaderboard with half the field still on the course. Mickelson, who will turn 43 on Sunday, left Merion on Monday night to return to San Diego, figuring he could practice better at home. He had planned all along to attend his daughter Amanda's graduation on Wednesday. He landed in Philadelphia a little after 4 a.m. ET on Thursday, and was at Merion just after 5:30 a.m., in advance of his 7:11 a.m. tee time. Mickelson, starting on the 11th hole, got in five holes at even par before lightning halted play followed by a lengthy thunderstorm that kept players off the course for just more than 3½ hours. Lol golf is one of those sports that if you don't play it, you won't really watch it. Same with me with basketball, hockey, or tennis. I'd rather do anything else than watch those sports. I like watching golf cause I'm an avid golfer and it's nice to see golf courses in top shape, rather than the field I call my home course.
Was hoping Phil would win the US Open but if he doesn't hole this wedge shot on 18 to force a playoff with Justin Rose he will lose by at least one shot. And Phil loses to Justin Rose.
me too. i was burnt out on tiger woods 10 years ago. enough is enough. yep, phil let this one slip away. he should have had it.
