The Dallas Cowboys have broken off negotiations with franchise-tagged defensive end Anthony Spencer, agent Jordan Woy told Mike Fisher of 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday, making it “most likely that he’ll play 2013 on the one-year deal.’’

The parties hit what sources called a “downturn’’ in talks in early July, the problem being the club believes recent NFL deals have shoved the market value of comparable players down to the $5-million-a-year range.Meanwhile, the Spencer camp wanted the recent five-year, $66-million extension given to Packers linebacker Clay Matthews to be part of the conversation. Or, at least, the $8-million-a-year deal Cleveland gave pass-rushing linebacker Paul Kruger to lure him from Baltimore.

“Both sides have worked really hard to reach a deal,’’ Woy says. “But at this point I would say it’s most likely that he’ll play 2013 on the one-year deal.’’

Spencer has been clear on what he wishes his future to be.

“I want to be here for the rest of my career,†he said recently. “Hopefully we can get that done. If we can’t, then so be it.â€

    Early July? WTF?

IMO, good move by the Cowboys. You shouldn't give an $8 million a year contract to a player who will turn 30 in January.

What about 11 for someone that turns 31 in July?

I'll agree with that statement only if they have his replacement waiting in the wings. Or he fails to adjust to the defensive change.

Spencer has 32.5 sacks in his career. Ware has 111.0 sacks in his career. You figure it out.

Ohhhhhhhh, well you didn't say it was ALSO performance-based.

Your point, if you have one?

That, as usual, you make no sense. First you say no player over 30 should get 8 million, then backtrack and say it's okay if he has x amount of a certain stat.

OK. I should have qualified what I said. Spencer doesn't deserve a max contract like that because his stats aren't as as good as Ware's are.

    There. Are you happy now?

So Spencer is a crap/undeserving player because he wasn't rushing the passer as often as Ware was for the majority of his career?

So, the Cowboys should give a huge contract to every player who wants one? The Cowboys are in salary cap Hell as it is. Giving Spencer an $8 million a year contract doesn't help them in that regard.

yeah. that's exactly what i said.

A: Its not a max contract, nowhere close.

B: Saying you dont want to pay him because he doesnt get sacks is freaking goobered.

For example, Ahmad Brooks plays the same position, doesnt get a ton of sacks, puts up similar numbers to Spencer, last year signed a deal that averages over 7 a year, and IMO is worth every penny. Just because a player doesnt have an elite amount of x stat doesnt mean he doesnt play a large and valuable role in the defense. You have said many times you wish your team would emulate the 49ers in how they build their team...well, paying the "other", less highly regarded OLB, is exactly what they did and is exactly what you're whining about the idea of your team doing now.

How old are you and Walnuts anyway?

IMO, he has not lived up to expectations. I applaud the Cowboys for not making an illogical move and overpaying him when this team's already in cap Hell to begin with.

Dallas better hope Spencer doesn't have a J.J. Watt-type year
