When the Patriots cut Aaron Hernandez 90 minutes after he was arrested on live television Wednesday morning, many people assumed the team knew Hernandez was about to be charged with first-degree murder, as well as five other weapons charges, Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reports.

Not so, according to a high-ranking Patriots executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

The source reiterated to the Globe late Friday that the Patriots’ brain trust, led by Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick, decided late last week to cut Hernandez if he were to be arrested in connection with the murder in any way. The source said the team’s leaders expected Hernandez to be arrested for obstruction of justice, and were “taken aback†when he was charged with murder later that afternoon.

“We had no inside knowledge,†the source said. “Did it matter to us? No. We were not going to have somebody on the team that’s close to a murder.â€

I'm calling bullcrap as well. There are Police Officials and FBI Agents in every NFL city that are on the "NFL Payroll." They are there as a resource to teams and to players. The Patriots knew a lot more than the general public way before the arrest was made.

p.r. move. they're trying to make it seem they would have cut him for any part of it, even just obstruction, which is bullcrap.

there is no way that they did not know he was gonna be charged with murder. somebody is bound to have told a member of the coaching staff or mr kraft himself that AH would be charged with murder,or they would not have released him as fast as they did.

If they didn't know and they released him, I'm sure in some way or form this violates the Rooney Rule. No?

They released him like 2 hours after he got arrested had their dude on the inside tell them he's in deep crap and then cut him based upon that, could also have been a P.R. move as it was stated before, want to hold up that image.

I don't give a heck what they knew or didn't know. I'm just glad he's not on the team anymore.

Why even say anything. I guess the Pats think everyone's gullible. No one blames them for dumping the dumb butt.

and if a policeman did leak what the charges were,i do not have a problem with it because they put their lives on the line everyday, and don't get crap out of it really!
