The Dallas Cowboys have reached an agreement with telecommunications giant AT&T to rename Cowboys Stadium to AT&T Stadium, according to ESPN’s Darren Rovell. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was reportedly seeking more than $25 million annually for the naming rights to the stadium but according to Rovell, Jones received less than $20 million a year from AT&T. AT&T Stadium opened up four years ago in 2009 and cost $1.1 billion to construct and has played host to Super Bowl XLV. In the coming years, AT&T Stadium will play host to the 2014 AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic, 2014 and 2015 Cowboys Classic Kickoff games, 2014 NCAA Men’s Final Four and 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship Game. Jerry Jones commented on renaming of Cowboys Stadium: “AT&T is an iconic American leader that has guided the path of communication in the world for more than 100 years,†Jones said in a news release. “Our stadium has always been about providing fans with an unsurpassed experience in the area of technology. With AT&T, we are growing our relationship with one of the world’s strongest and most innovative companies to ultimately provide fans with the latest cutting-edge technology for many years to come.†Source: Sports Illustrated
While I would have liked the stadium renamed AT&T Cowboys Stadium, that's not realistic. I think there are only 6 stadiums in the NFL that don't have some sort of sponsorship. The Cowboys are just following suit. I'll still call it the Death Star. Heard this morning that what you will see not too long from now is advertising on players uniforms. The NFL is leaving about $300 million dollars on the table by refusing to do it. That will change in the next 4 years or so. Players uniforms will look like NASCAR drivers racing suits.
it's possible but I find it doubtful just because that's going to put teams in precarious situations when players do something or say something even kind of dumb. sponsors won't want them wearing their stuff anymore, so the teams may be faced with decisions they shouldn't have to. it's a slippery slope,.
^^This^^ Imagine if this was already out there & a sponsor wakes up to the news on what their poster boy Aaron Hernandez has been up to. :icon_eek:
Rich, it's $$$$ that rules the world. I still think you'll see it before too long. Within the next 3-4 years, it'll happen. There's too much money involved to not do it.
I think I'd rather have my favorite NFL team play in a stadium sponsored by a telecommunications giant as opposed to a company that makes ketchup (Heinz Field) or a company that makes jeans (Levi Stadium).
