Dolphins defensive tackle Randy Starks, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, isn't a starter right now, and he think he knows the reason — he's being punished.

Starks, who signed a one-year $8.45 million contract tender after being designated as the Dolphins' franchise player, sat out OTAs (Organized Team Activities) to show his distaste at not receiving a multi-year contract but was present for the mandatory mini-camp.

"I've been there before," Starks said. "I'm not going to say nothing bad about it. It is what it is. I wasn't here so I guess this is my punishment."

Starks will come off the bench in a three-man rotation with fellow defensive tackles Paul Soliai and Jared Odrick but the number of snaps each plays should be fairly equal. But he's not overly concerned about coming off the bench.

"The year I was a backup [2008] I was one of the most dominant players on the defensive line," he said. "If that's the case I have the potential do it again."

Beyond that, Starks said he's too seasoned to worry about minutiae such as starting.

"I'm a 10-year veteran," he said. "All those things to make me fired up, I don't really need all that. Whatever role I'm called to do this year I'm going to do."

If it wasn't a big deal, I don't think I'd be reading your take on it, Randy.

Also, Odrick has been beasting all off season, he owned the Bucs the other night, and has been doing that all along, making Starks much more expendable. And while I want Randy to stay, a multiyear deal for a guy who is 30 and has a younger replacement already is not a great idea.
