Cam Johnson’s sensational performance in Thursday’s preseason finale against the Chargers helped the 2012 seventh-round pick secure a roster spot.

And, perhaps, it also allowed the 49ers to secure a draft pick.

Four days after Johnson had two sacks, two quarterback hurries and blocked a punt that he recovered for a touchdown, the outside linebacker was traded to the Colts on Monday. The 49ers received a 2014 seventh-round pick, the NFL Network reported. The 49ers already have 12 picks in the 2104 draft, not including any compensatory selections.

“We appreciate Cam’s efforts since joining our team a year ago,â€￾ general manager Trent Baalke. “He has continued to grow as a football player and we wish him all the best with his new opportunity in Indianapolis.â€￾

    12 pick again wow.

Opens up practicly the whole draft to them. Traded with us last year up to 18 and barely dented their haul

Yeah well eleven of them are sevenths it seems like. I'm not against trading players for picks if you've got players to burn and are getting good returns, but this is the second LB we've given away for a 7th recently. One, while nothing spectacular, is a starter on the right team, that's worth more than a 7th IMO...and now, a young, fairly promising player shown the door for another seventh. It's not the end of the world I guess, but I don't really get it.

Also, it's 13 picks, we'll get a high comp for Dashon.

Granted we got a WR from Seattle who looks like a younger, faster Boldin. But we get a 7th round pick for a player we drafted 7th, whom we developed pretty well from the looks of it? Shouldn't we be selling up? Hard to question what they're doing with the recent results, but I'm confused
