Eagles first-year coach Chip Kelly admitted Monday that he wasn't aware of the league's rules regarding injury timeouts when Michael Vick left the game for one play after being shaken up on the team's final series, CSNPhilly reports.

Backup quarterback Nick Foles entered the game for the ensuing play (second down) and threw an incomplete pbutt. Vick immediately returned to the field for third down. Kelly later learned he could have called a timeout to allow his starting quarterback time to recover on the field and not miss a play.

Kelly spent his entire coaching at the collegiate level but he claims his inexperience in the NFL had nothing to do with his misinterpretation, and that other coaches could make the same mistake.

"It’s difficult for anybody to be snap familiar with any rule because the rulebook is so thick," Kelly said.
