Two days after Aldon Smith was arrested at 7:02 a.m. for suspicion of DUI and marijuana possession, the 49ers will push for their All-Pro outside linebacker to enter a rehab facility this week, according to ESPN and FOX Sports. Smith is still expected to play today against the Colts at Candlestick Park, but he could play “sparingly,†the NFL Network reported. Given the the reports that the team wants Smith to enter rehab, it seems possible that Smith could be deactivated today. On Friday, about seven hours after Smith was arrested, Jim Harbaugh said he expected Smith to play against Indianapolis. FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer said, via Twitter, that people close to Smith, who was arrested for DUI in January 2012, are concerned about him and are encouraging him to seek treatment for a substance-abuse problem. I think this is a good idea. Aldon Smith is a damn good player but will derail his career with boneheaded choices like his most recent arrest.
It was just on the Jets/Bills game that his locker has been cleaned out and the team president has said that he is suspended indefinitely.
