Multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation tell TMZ ... the injured child is Adrian's son, but it's not Adrian Peterson Jr., the child he's been famously photographed with in public over the years.

We reached out to Peterson's reps -- but so far, we have not heard back.

86WARD's Take: Really...what the heck is wrong with people? Wishing Peterson and most of all his son the best and the worst on the person who did this!

This is sad to hear. Anyone who beats a kid gets ZERO respect from me. Prayers are with AP and his son.

Situations like this are awful, but the worse part is that this getting attention is an exception to the rule that people generally try to shrug off such incidents because they make you depressed and pissed at the world.

These crimes are SO common, and penalties are not in line with what is attempted child murder. I've written several stories with families whose kids are severely handicapped from being beaten, shaken, or both. The maximum penalty in many instances? Eight years. We give out much more in drug cases, which is beyond hecked. These are the kind of people prisons were built for.

They should tie that butthole to a goal post and let AP repeatedly run into him

    And Peterson Tweeted:
Don't worry about the fans and the Vikings, Adrian. But good luck with the media.
