D'Antoni wanted the team to pick up his option for 2015-16 season. Lakers probably won't have a new coach before the draft lottery.

Mike D'Antoni resigned Wednesday as the Lakers' coach, ending a tumultuous two-year run with the team and putting a finishing touch on one of their worst seasons ever.

D'Antoni had one more guaranteed year for $4 million but was dismayed when the Lakers declined to pick up his option for the 2015-16 season at another $4 million. [More]

I totally agree with the first half of your post. Shame on the Lakers (Mitch Kupchak) for the signing. D'Antoni can coach an upbeat offense with defense secondary. That was proven in PHX with his "7 Seconds or Less" offense but porous defense. After his stint in NY where he didn't have the players to run his style of offense, you would have thought that LA got the hint.

to me guys like him will give you exciting offense (yes if the talent is there) but ultimately never win it all because you need defense in the playoffs.

Tell me about it. Every year the Suns under his 'rule' were a 50+ win team, but once the playoffs started and we had to play the Spurs....see ya'. Where I will agree with your take on him being a crapty HC is that he will not adapt his coaching to the types of players on the roster.

I have a couple of things to say on this.

    A) this was the Lakers trying to take the spotlight back from the Clippers
    B) this was one of the worse signings ever for the Lakers. He was not fit to run this team. Or any NBA team.
    C) The Lakers need to start realizing that Kobe is close to being done, and can't be the focal point of this team any longer
    D) I fully expect the Lakers to be the strongest suitors for Kevin Durant
    E) The Lakers are in for revenge on Phil Jackson, not sure they will be successful but it might an interesting war between Knicks and Lakers
    F) I think the Lakers need to go after Derick Fisher for coach.

Kevin Ollie, John Calipari and Tom Thibodeau are supposedly high on the Lakers wish list. Guessing that Derek Fisher will one day be a good HC, but stepping into the top job directly from the court isn't something I'd consider as a GM. But then again, this is LA. @LebaneseFF ..... do you think Jason Kidd is really the best HC for the Nets?

Hey man. YES YES YES and a 1000 times yes. Jason Kidd was one of the best HEAD COACH hire in the past several years. Listen I am not being a homer (and I know saying that is kind of stupid) but

you have to remember several things.
-Kidd doesn't have the players to run his system yet. He is playing with players that have been given to him. It's clear for Kidd that he wants a team that plays heavy defense and scores in transition. The nets are one of the worst this year at that. (Been better in 2014)
    - This is Kidd's first year
    - He was never an assistant but he didn't want to be one that is a risk a franchise has to take

If you ask me to rate hires in the past 5 years. Kidd is in my top 3. which would look like this.

    A) Tom Thibs (I am still angry the Nets didn't even attempt at grabbing all those years back)
    B) Mark Jackson (also made the transition to HC)
    C) Hornacek/Kidd

    They are tied for 3rd.

I think Kidd will be one of the best coaches in history. Only time will tell.

Marc Jackson is a much better head coach. Long run too. I am a homer but I do know my limits. :)
