Christian Ponder recently suggested that Matt Cassel is the favorite to start the season as the Minnesota Vikings' quarterback. Whether that's the case or not, coach Mike Zimmer doesn't plan to name his Week 1 starter until well into training camp. "I want to give everybody an opportunity and make sure that it's a legitimate opportunity for all of them," Zimmer said Tuesday, via USA Today's Tom Pelissero. "Then we'll start narrowing down the reps as we get going. But it won't be for a while." Zimmer explained that he wants to guard against rushing into a decision as opposed to "making the correct decision." Although Zimmer has stated the organization obviously hopes Bridgewater will earn the job, their first-round investment might have to wait until later in the season to push Cassel aside. Pelissero, a former Vikings beat writer, would be "stunned" if Cassel isn't under center versus the Rams in early September. Source: NFL.com
Norv Turner said yesterday he really likes the QB group, even Ponder, who has "made a lot of progress". Don't know whether to believe the Ponder statement or if Norv is towing the company line to try and push Ponders' trade value??
Ponder, to me, is too up and down. He will never beat you with his arm and decision making ability. He is another Alex Smith. Game manager and that is not bad when you have AP to hand the ball off to. But if it is that close then go with Bridgewater, your future.
