Geno Smith's short career has been a rough one so far. Falling in the draft, taking over for the New York Jets earlier than expected and struggling to play consistently has only been the beginning. Who is to blame for his struggles in New York? CBS's Boomer Esiason breaks down the Jets' quarterback and front-office situations. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...-geno-smiths-struggles-with-the-new-york-jets
Just because Smith had success in the West Virginia system does not automatically mean that he possessed the qualities of being a QB in the NFL. Look at how many organizations were dead wrong in their assessment of Tom Brady on draft day. Ultimately, the decision to bring any player into camp lies with the GM. What they do with that player at that point of course is important, but maybe that player should not have been brought in in the first place. That said, if the Jets were that serious about Smith being the "franchise QB" it was incumbent that the GM bring in players to compliment Smith's game. While I think Rex Ryan's decision making on who to put behind center is a joke, at the end of the day he can only put players on the field that the GM signed up. So who's at fault?........ultimately it's GM Dan Idzik.
I think the Jets are a disaster from top to bottom so smith never really had a chance. Having said that, I'm not sure smith would have been that great even in the best situation.
He's not that good to start with and then combine that with the disaster that is Rex Ryan and the New York Jets and there's little to no chance he will succeed.
The dude's got no chance against linebackers who run a 4.6 40. And he certainly doesn't possess pocket-passer skills. Most people saw what he did at WVA and he was terrific. But that certainly didn't translate into him being an NFL franchise QB. Stick him behind center in Denver and he'd still struggle.
