Overview

One of the most electrifying return specialists in the game, Leodis McKelvin also developed into a standout cover cornerback during his time with the Trojans. Even though he touched the ball only twice on offense, he amassed a school all-time record 3,909 all-purpose yards, the third-best career total in Sun Belt Conference history.

His eight total kicks returned for touchdowns (seven punts, one kickoff) tied the NCAA Division 1-A record. His 211 total returned kicks (99 kickoffs/112 punts) topped the previous collegiate record of 203 by Deltha O'Neal of California (1996-99) and his 3,817 total kick return yards also established an NCAA record, surpassing O'Neal's old mark of 3,455 yards.

At Ware County High School, McKelvin earned first-team Class AAAA All-State honors from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Georgia Sportswriters Association. As a senior, he was named Area Defensive Player of the Year, as well as to the Georgia Times Union Super 11 team. He participated in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association North-South All-Star Game after his final campaign.

McKelvin started at left cornerback, helping lead the team to a 9-2 record, a regional title and a second-round AAAA playoff appearance in 2003. That year, he recorded 51 tackles, recovered three fumbles, intercepted six passes and broke up six others. He also blocked two field-goal attempts. As a junior, he posted 60 tackles and six interceptions on defense and also had eight receptions for over 300 yards as a receiver. In addition to football, he was a member of the Ware County basketball team.

As a true freshman at Troy, McKelvin played in 12 games as a reserve cornerback, seeing most of his action on special teams and the defensive sub package. He posted 17 tackles (13 solos), returned an interception 71 yards for a touchdown and broke up one pbutt. He ranked second in the Sun Belt Conference and 29th nationally with 26 punt returns for 304 yards (11.7-yard average) and a pair of scores. He also ranked second in the league with 15 kickoff returns for 328 yards (21.9 avg), gaining 703 all-purpose yards.

A finalist for the National Return Man of the Year Award, McKelvin was named second-team All-Sun Belt Conference as a return specialist in 2005. He appeared in 11 games as a reserve cornerback, collecting 30 tackles (26 solo) with a nine-yard sack and a fumble recovery. He deflected six passes and blocked one kick. He also led the conference and ranked 16th nationally with 33 punt returns for 417 yards (12.6-yard average) and a touchdown. He led the league with 619 yards and a score on 24 kickoff returns (25.8 avg), becoming the first player in school history to score on an interception, kickoff return and punt return in a career.

McKelvin was an All-American honorable mention and All-Sun Belt Conference choice as a return specialist in 2006. He scored once on 28 punt returns for 314 yards (11.2-yard average) and had 27 kickoff returns for 634 yards (23.5 avg). He started all 13 games at left cornerback, delivering 66 tackles (56 solo) with two quarterback pressures and a pair of forced fumbles. He also intercepted one pass and batted away seven others.

McKelvin earned All-American and All-Sun Belt Conference first-team honors as a senior. In 12 starts at left cornerback, he registered a career-high 60 tackles (50 solo) and 2.5 stops for minus-6 yards. He caused three fumbles and returned a fumble recovery 36 yards. He lost nine yards on two interceptions and broke up nine passes. He ranked fourth in the nation with 25 punt returns for 436 yards (17.4-yard average) and a conference record three touchdowns. He finished third in the league with 33 kickoff returns for 765 yards (23.2 avg), and led the Trojans with 1,228 all-purpose yards.

In 48 games at Troy, McKelvin started 25 times. He recorded 173 tackles (145 solo) with a nine-yard sack and 4.5 stops for losses of 18 yards. He caused five fumbles, recovering two others, including one that he advanced 36 yards. He deflected 22 passes and blocked a kick. He lost six yards on two carries, but gained 62 yards with a score on four interception returns. As a return specialist, he ran back 112 punts for 1,471 yards (13.1-yard average) and seven touchdowns. He also gained 2,346 yards with a score on 99 kickoff returns. He ranks third in Sun Belt annals with a school career-record 3,909 all-purpose yards.

Analysis

Positives: Has a lean frame, but shows good muscle tone and the body to carry another 10 pounds without having the added weight impact his quickness...Not the most instinctive ball hawk you will find, but he has quick feet and good change-of-direction agility to close, once he locates the ball...Smooth open-field runner with the balance, body control and leaping ability to make plays on balls that are outside of his frame (must extend for the ball more often, though, as he will body catch)...Can take the plays from the chalkboard to the field with just a few reps...Plays with good confidence and he will not hesitate to combat for the jump balls or mix it up with receivers running through their patterns...Will get rag-dolled at the line of scrimmage in run support, but still shows willingness to plug the rush lanes (made 24 plays in run support as a senior)...Hard worker in practices and in the training room and is respected by the staff and his teammates, taking pride in his team captaincy...When he doesn't bail out of his backpedal too early, he generates good transition quickness and a burst to close coming out of his breaks...Needs to extend for the ball, but you can see that he has the timing and leaping ability to get to the pass at its high point...He will get high in his pedal and shuffle his feet at times, but comes out of his breaks with good balance...Not that strong, but is a pester type that will keep his hands active in attempts to reroute the receiver...When he plants and drives smoothly, he is capable of mirroring the receiver (will struggle to recover when he fails to open his hips)...Shows the willingness and toughness to quickly support vs. run and will throw his body around to get the ballcarrier on the ground (likes contact)...Sees routes develop adequately, but is better when he can sink under deep stuff and react to things in front of him rather than play deep in the zone (will have lapses and allow a receiver to come free when he eyeballs the backfield too long)...Will fight for the ball in a crowd (shows good courage) and gets excellent elevation to combine with solid body control adjusting to the ball in flight...Does not shy away from contact and while he has marginal weight-room strength, he will lower his shoulder and thump a ballcarrier in attempts to contain the outside run...Shows good vision, foot quickness, and change-of-direction agility as a return specialist...Fields the ball cleanly as a kickoff and punt returner and has a knack for making big plays with the ball in his hands...Not a great wrap-up tackler (struggles to bring opponents down), but will square up and put his hat on the ballcarrier (not effective when he tackles to the side, as he will fall off those hits).

Negatives: Lacks ideal bulk, but has good muscle definition...Does not always play up to his timed speed, but does show good urgency to close (hip flexibility is just adequate)...Needs to be more alert on the field, as he will be fooled by pump fakes and play-action...Lacks the overall strength to be a physical tackler and needs to show better route anticipation; eyes the backfield too long rather than mirroring the receiver...Not the type that can naturally locate the ball, but will get there once he finds it...Must refine his backpedal technique, as he opens his hips too soon and comes out of his pedal early (would get a better break if he was not so tall in his stance, as it narrows his hips, preventing him from getting a fluid turn on the ball)...When he spends too much time looking into the backfield when playing deep in the zone, receivers have had success getting behind him...Must take better angles closing on the ball and, when a receiver gets behind him, he struggles to recover...More of a drag-down type of tackler, but he needs to face up and wrap better (will take a side, letting receivers break his arm tackles)...Must do a better job of securing the ball and protecting it on returns (leaves it exposed, resulting in costly fumbles...Willing in run force, but lacks the tackle technique and power to be effective playing at line, getting washed out often by bigger blockers in a crowd...Has adequate hands, but he needs to do a better job of extending for the ball (uses his body as a crutch and several of his pass deflections could have been interceptions if he caught the ball outside his frame).

Compares To: R.W. McQUARTERS-New York Giants...Like McQuarters, McKelvin is a solid return specialist, even though he does not always play to his timed speed. He needs some technique refinement, but due to a lack of natural power, he is never going to be a physical tackler. He shows willingness in run support, but is better making plays on the move than getting bounced around in tight quarters. Like McQuarters, he runs hot-and-cold with his ball-reaction skills, sometimes looking like Bambi staring down at the headlights of an oncoming truck. McKelvin has the ability to break a game open once he finds a crease on returns. Until he can prove that he can add strength, his immediate value will be on special teams.

Injury Report

2003: Missed two games during his high school senior year due to a concussion.

2005: Suffered a left shoulder (AC joint) sprain during March camp and the injury bothered him going forward.

2006: Had surgery in April to repair a right ankle fracture.

McKelvin follows path laid by Ware and Umenyiora

Leodis McKelvin claims he's been a sleeper all of his life. By midday Saturday, he should be wide awake - and in the NFL.

The Troy cornerback, who eight months ago was projected as a second-day selection, is expected to go within the first dozen picks of the NFL draft and be the first player taken from an Alabama school. Even taking into account the draft's leisurely pace and Chris Berman's overblown hyperbole, McKelvin should still celebrating by 2:30 p.m.

"It's going to be a great day," McKelvin said.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder, generally regarded as the top cornerback prospect, has no shortage of suitors. He's been seen everywhere except on Letterman the past few weeks, visiting no fewer than 10 NFL teams.

This week, he said he's been busy in Troy "doing makeup work. I've been out the last two weeks."

That's makeup school work, not makeup skill work. McKelvin, whose test scores coming out of high school in Waycross, Ga., scared off higher-profile programs, is scheduled to graduate this summer with a degree in sports medicine.

"It's very important to me," McKelvin said. "I've put a lot of time into it and I want my mom to be happy.

"A degree is something you're not always going to have a chance to get. Once you leave, it's hard to go back."

McKelvin shouldn't have to lean on his formal education for some time. Aside from his 4.35 speed and his willingness to tackle from the corner spot - he had 50 solos in 2007 alone - he's a true dual threat as a returner.

Ask Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, who found out first-hand last season that McKelvin is a man ... with the ball in his hands. He returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter of Troy's rout of the Cowboys.

That return for a score was one of eight McKelvin had during his Troy career, which earned him a piece of the Division I record. His 3,817 total kick-return yards is a record he has all to himself.

Given the recent success of Chicago's Devin Hester as a game-changing return man, McKelvin's NFL value has never been higher than right now.

"He's done everything for us," Troy coach Larry Blakeney said. "As a corner, he will gamble because he's not afraid. Not that he hasn't been beaten, because he has. But he's also come back and made big, big plays.

"He's gained confidence as a punt returner over the years. Those return guys, they have to have a little bit of daring in them. And he certainly has it."

The cache McKelvin carries with the pro scouts has been helped out immeasurably by recent Troy players who panned out in the pros, specifically DeMarcus Ware of the Cowboys and Osi Umenyiora of the Giants. The two ex-Auburn High stars were overlooked by big-name schools, developed in college and are now Pro Bowlers.

"What has happened because of recruiting limits on players is the big schools are only getting 25 a year, so they're taking less chances," said Blake Beddingfield, scouting coordinator for the Tennessee Titans.

"So you have a DeMarcus Ware or a Leodis McKelvin at Troy, a guy who is underdeveloped in high school. Leodis told us Georgia looked at him, but they thought he was a guy who was going to have to take time to develop. Demarcus was in Auburn's back yard. They didn't take him because he was a 195-pound linebacker."

For McKelvin, any talk he hears about Troy's lack of big-time exposure is just another chip to pile onto his shoulder.

"Troy has been a great school - they've had my back from the beginning," McKelvin said. "(The NFL) doesn't have to second-guess what we can do. The past two times they've picked guys high (Ware and Umenyiora), they've shown what we can do."

McKelvin will get his chance.

"He's done everything by the numbers since he got here, done everything right down the line to get to this point," Blakeney said. "He's done his school work. He's stayed out of trouble.

"He's always had that little personal grudge, like he's got to prove he's good enough to play with the best. I think that's maybe what drives him."

Hard Times Have Hardened Hardy

James Hardy simply put was a wildly productive receiver at Indiana. At 6'6" and 220 pounds he would leap over defenders, shield them from the football or just outrun them to make plays, often scoring plays with 36 touchdowns in 36 career games. The only thing hanging over him was a pair of incidents in his college career.

One was a domestic situation involving his girlfriend and child that was ultimately dismissed. The other development was a two game team suspension. Buffalo's scouting staff investigated and found there was more to Hardy's story.

"He had a rough upbringing," said Bills scout Tom Roth. "I don't think he's a bad kid at all. He just had a rough upbringing and that's the way I see it. You can't knock him for that. You have to give him some credit just for what he's been through."

While some might see that as a convenient way around a talented player's character, Buffalo's due diligence was dead on.

Hardy's life was anything but easy. At age five his father began serving a 10-year prison sentence. By age 13 he moved out to live on his own only to move in with an uncle, who had just been released from prison.

"He had a one bedroom apartment and I had to live in the living room with an air mattress and a little TV and feed myself so I learned how to use time management and survive on my own," said Hardy of his living arrangements with his uncle. "He wasn't financially stable to take care of me, but he gave me a roof over my head."

That proved to be enough for Hardy to get by as he passed as much time as he could at school.

"I would just stay at school in the gym or on the field so I wouldn't have to go home," said Hardy.

All that time playing basketball and football helped him fine tune his skills and earned him a scholarship to Indiana. He tried to play both sports, but the plan quickly changed by the close of his freshman year.

"Football just started taking off for me," said Hardy. "My coach, the late Terry Hoeppner, showed me some things on tape that he thought I could do on the football field and he said if I just focused on them that I could be a great receiver at the next level. When he told me that I knew there was no point to play basketball anymore and that football was my calling."

By his junior season Hardy was unstoppable scoring 16 touchdowns in 13 games with 1,125 receiving yards on 79 catches. For a Bills team looking to change field goals into touchdowns in the red zone, Hardy might be the best answer they could have found.

"When it's the red zone there's like another light comes on in my mind and I have to get in that end zone," said Hardy. "If the ball is anywhere in my area I will get in there."

But the questions were still there about the black marks on his record. Buffalo's head coach twinky Jauron spoke with Hardy at the combine about his past.

"Number one, the issue was dismissed," said Jauron of the domestic incident. "That was important to us. Number two the young man talked about it, and there were no more issues with him. We take all of those things very seriously, and we felt it was clear that he did also. Our interview with him was good. He's a serious young man."

"I'm an honest person," said Hardy. "I'm not going to lie to you about the situation. It was a situation that was blown all out of proportion. I told them exactly what happened and how it happened and I just told them that I'm the type of guy where that is in the past and that was something I had to deal with two years ago and it hasn't been a problem and it won't be a problem. I had to learn a lot of things on my own. I just want to come in and be the best man God wants me to be and make Buffalo proud."

It's that approach that sold Buffalo's talent evaluators.

"I think he probably had an early life that was harder than a lot of people's, but you see where he is now," said Bills Vice President of College Scouting Tom Modrak. "You go through tough times and come out as a top athlete and football player and to continue to go to school and get a college education. That's to his credit."

"A very strong person," said Jauron of Hardy. "He's done a good job to survive."

Having persevered through some major hardships at a young age, now as a man the potential adversity that could face him on the football field at the NFL level seems almost trivial to him.

"I feel that there's nothing I can't be prepared for now," Hardy said. "God puts things in your life for a particular reason. It's just up to you how to figure out how to handle them. I had a couple of bumps in the road, but I also had no one teaching me things. Now I'm a man and I admit to my mistakes and look them in the eye and say that's in the past and I'm moving forward."

But Hardy succeeded as soon as he heard his name called Saturday. Being selected by the Bills was the end result of his former life. It's why despite being so strong through his formative years he broke down when he got the call from Buffalo.

"I started at the age of seven and I always saw myself being at the professional level whether it was football or basketball," said Hardy. "And now that it actually happened and seeing my name coach called me right before they picked me I couldn't stop crying. I'm not a very emotional guy, but it's just something that's surreal."

And though he's turned the page on his former life to start a new one, he's committed to the work that lies ahead.

"It's a new beginning in Buffalo and we're going to get off to a good start," said Hardy. "I'm ready to get to work and we will get in that end zone."

Unfortunately....I heard an interview on FOXSPORTS radio with McKelvin shortly after he was selected......and I really hope they only let him play and not talk because he made Emmit Smith sound good. Sorry Bills fans....not dissing the pick at all but after every sentence I just said...."HUH? WHAT DID HE SAY?"

That's what I'm thinking too. Could some of the 2nd day picks be good role players or special teamers? Perhaps. But that's about it. No one from that group will be threatening for a starting position ever.

from what i've read, demetrius bell is a developmental prospect. he'll take a few years before we know what we've got w/ him. that reggie corner guy is supposedly a STEAL, and i'm interested in seeing what he brings to the table. Alvin Bowen is probably going to be plugged into special teams, and form what everyone tells me he should excel. Chris Ellis hopefully is going to be our spark off the bench in terms of pass rushing. Steve Johnson is a big WR that had a pretty decent career @ kentucky.

Larry Felser wrote a column in the News about putting Tim Russert on the Ralph Wall Of Fame. Read it here. He calls Russert an ambassador for the Bills and for the fans outside of Buffalo who support the team still. (both of them) That weak argument is Larry's reason to put him on the Wall. I couldn't disagree more. As much as I respect Russert as a journalist and like that he pimps our team on national tv, all he is essentially is an average fan with a forum no one else does. "The 12th Man" ie the fans are already on the wall. He is a part of that. There is no need to single out any fan on the stadium Wall.

Props to columnist Mark Gaughan for calling out Felser on the absurdity of his story is his blog. He sums it up real nice when he said:

As a member of the Wall of Fame committee, I was a bit surprised by Larry's position. I think Russert was an great ambassador for Buffalo. He was a great Bills fan. I think the Wall should be reserved for the actual participants on the field and, in very rare cases, in the front office. I think Russert is represented by the fact "The 12th Man" already is on the Wall of Fame.

At the same time, the best way to kill this issue is to get Toronto a team that would rival the Bills, not actually be them. Animosity is the key to all sports, and it would be hard to find two groups of NHL fans who despise each other more than followers of the Sabres and Leafs; using that model of mutual contempt as a football blueprint would be a wise move for a league that should look to expand regional matchups.

In for Jason Peters at left tackle was Kirk Chambers who was the team's swing tackle last season and started in place of Peters in Week 17 at Philadelphia last season.

Josh Reed was on the outside at receiver with the first unit as the offense stayed mainly in their base formation the entire practice while James Hardy and Roscoe Parrish primarily worked with the second unit.

On the defensive side of the ball with Kyle Williams excused for the birth of his second child, John McCargo stepped into the starting lineup at right defensive tackle next to Marcus Stroud and other than that everything remained the same with the starting defense as it was in the spring

TE Derek Schouman had three receptions in the morning session and continues to get more of the starter reps over Robert Royal. Buffalobills.com asked twinky Jauron if Royal is being eased back into practice coming off the knee injury and Jauron said Royal's health is not an issue. "He's been free to go (play)," said Jauron. "We have five tight ends so we're kind of mixing them in and they're taking their reps, but we haven't put in a lot of restriction time on him." Thus far however, Derek Schouman has been the most impressive performer in the tight end group in the team scrimmage series.
