According to Scott Lauber, the Phillies sent outfield prospect Greg Golson to the Rangers for another outfield prospect, John Mayberry Jr. Golson, 23, hit .282/.333/.434 in 426 Double A at-bats this year. Mayberry, 25 in December, hit .263/.316/.474 at Triple A. Source: MLBtr
I honestly don't understand the trade, Mayberry has a bit more power, where golson has more speed and is better defensively. Both rarely walk and strikeout at a pretty good rate. Both are former first round picks, but golsen was a first rounder out of high school and has risen the ranks and continues to ascend. Mayberry has seemingly leveled off and hit only .263 this past year. Some people think that the Phillies take too many tools guys and not enough power hitters, but I think that is just goobered and unless Mayberry is hitting 40HR's for us, I just don't get the deal.
Personally I like this move for Texas. Mayberry hasn't lived up to expectations and hes 25 now and still a bad hitter. Hes got power so if he makes it too the bigs hes a potential 20+ HR hitter. I'm happy with Golson younger and better so far. Mike summed him up pretty good. Clears a logjam at the Corner Outfield postion... Next deal for Texas Salty to Boston? I think so, I hope we get Bucholz for sure.
Seriously? We just gave away Michael Bourn 2.0, except this time we didn't get an all-star closer in return. Nothing to be upset about. Golson is fast, but that's about it. His OBP leaves much to be desired, he strikes out way too much and he can't hit a fastball for his life. He might do damage on the basepaths, like Bourn, but at best, he's a defensive replacement/pinch runner. It's a little confusing in the sense that Golson may be more attractive in a trade package than Mayberry, but it's not a loss for either side. Both guys will flame out.
that's why it's a puzzling move, At least Golson is young and has gotten better and shown signs of continuing to get better, mayberry has stopped growing from what I have seen and read. Like I said, The Phillies have been criticized for taking too many tools players, but I think that is a ridiculous thing to be criticized about.
When you get guys like Hewitt who are striking out in more than 50% of their at bats, it's not. Arbuckle has insisted on taking high ceiling guys rather than safe bets and almost none have worked out.
sorry, i don't trust amaro one bit. no reason to make this deal. like mentioned earlier he's the more attractive player that could've been used in a future deal. bottom line is this, the deal is not biggy and amaro needs to figure out he's going to do about utley being out for that much time as it will hurt this line-up.
I'm more concerned about re-signing Moyer and finding a replacement left fielder. If we sign a guy like Punto, great, but I don't think it's all that necessary. A few weeks split between Donald and Bruntlett o a week of Bruntlett would be fine by me.
i think utley being out is bigger than you think. not fielding wise but in the line-up. but i agree addressing moyer and leftfield is more important. i'd love to see the rumor of a trade for dye come true.
the only reason that I could think of the Phillies doing this deal is because they know someone is interested in mayberry and are going to use him as part of a deal, but that is a real stretch. What about Adam Dunn? Brad Wilkerson? Raul Ibenez? even Milton Bradley?
"What is your take on the Golson for Mayberry J.R. Trade? Was it a good trade for the phillies or not? I think I'd rather have Golson." from some Baseball guy in a chat with fans.
You're quoting "some baseball guy" whose conviction on the matter is only strong enough to use the term "I think"? What is this supposed to mean? When given the choice between a bust and a bust with a higher ceiling(Golson), many people would choose the latter. No one really wins in this deal. It's like a swap of bad contracts, except in this case, it's a swap of specs who didn't work out.
