"No news is good news in surgery, so it was with some degree of relief that the Phillies digested their initial report on the success of All-Star second baseman Chase Utley's hip procedure, which took place Monday in New York. The medical term for what renowned surgeon Dr. Bryan Kelly performed was a debridement, which essentially means a piece of the labrum in the hip was shaved off. According to Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., Kelly also cleaned out some bone fragments from the hip, all in an effort to relieve the uncomfortable "pinching" sensation that plagued Utley throughout his nevertheless impressive 2008 season. I wasn't expecting anything to go wrong, but it's still nice to hear. Apparently the guy who did it was one of the best hip doctors (don't know the formal term) in the country.
