According to Sweeny Murti of WFAN, the Giants signed shortstop Edgar Renteria to a two-year, $18MM contract. We'll update the post with more details and confirmation as it becomes available. If the report is accurate, the Tigers get the Giants' second-round pick without worrying about whether to offer Renteria arbitration.

    Not exactly.

This would be a horrible move for the Giants, so it's a good thing they appeared to back off. They'd be better off with an in-house option than they would be overpaying for Renteria.

Good Shortstops are in high demand though. Wonder whos going to get him. Another bad post on my behalf lol sorry for any confusion.

No worries. Doesn't look like many people cared what the Giants were doing anyway. And MLB.com was also reporting it at one point.

And there is, but I wouldn't classify Renteria as a good shortstop. He's been going downhill for a while now. The Giants have a great farm system. If there's no one down there they can plug in right away, they're just better off saving the money and waiting til their specs are ready.

Looks like they have signed him.
