Padres general manager Kevin Towers told FOXSports.com's Gerry Fraley earlier Monday that the team was only in talks with the Cubs. "We should have a pretty good idea of where we are by Thursday," Towers said. "We should know if we could move on or drop it." But the Phillies threw their name into the mix later Monday, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reported. The Padres like some of the Phillies' young minor-league pitchers, major-league sources told Rosenthal, but the talks are only in the preliminary stages. Source: FoxSports.com
I love how yesterday Towers says "if its not a deal with the Cubs, we're keeping him". Makes me wonder what the Phillies offered up to catch his ear?
The Phillies wouldn't be getting Peavy, they'd be helping the Cubs get Peavy as part of a three or four-way trade. The original report was that we would be getting Mark Derosa (who could fill in at 2B while Utley is out and then play LF) for JA Happ and Coste/Jaramillo, but now the reports are that the Twins are in on the deal and they would be getting Derosa leaving us with Marquis (piece of crap) for Happ/Kendrick and Jaramillo. Either one would probably be a bad trade for us because Derosa is a one-year rental, however Derosa is such a good fit here that it would be easy to overlook the fact that we gave p a solid, low risk prospect for him. Marquis on the other hand would make me sick. Happ could probably put up better numbers than him right now, so to trade a cheap number five starter option for an overpaid piece of garbage would be goobered, imo. Especially when doing it, you're also helping some of your main competition in the NL get better. I'm praying we end up with Derosa, but if the Twins reports are true, then I'm praying Amaro pulls out of this deal.
