Hot on the heels of an early-May minicamp featuring mostly rookies, we hear the player who probably made the most lasting impression was 49ers third-round draft pick Glen Coffee, a determined-looking running back who has been compared by more than a few evaluators to fellow Alabama grad and 2005 NFL MVP Shaun Alexander. Coffee looked really good, really quick, a team source said. He runs with a real desperation, much bigger than his size (6-0, 209), kind of like a young Frank Gore. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to run like he did at Alabama (he gained 1,383 yards and scored 10 touchdowns last season to help the Tide reach the Sugar Bowl), but you really have to like the way he carries himself. i'm sure raye and singletary will give coffee every chance to succeed. they're going to run a lot and throw to their backs a lot and they need someone else back there other than gore.
