Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton shrugs off criticism that he doesn't have an NFL-caliber arm. "I've had a strong enough arm my entire career. I don't listen to critics," Orton told 104.3 The Fan in Denver. "I feel like I've had a nice start to my career and being with these coaches and these players, I'm just getting better and better and I just think this trade is the jump start to the second part of my career." Kyle can blow it off all he wants, but it doesn't change the facts. He was (and will be, IMO) unable to accurately throw down the field.
and he's just going to be asked to manage the games. Denver will run the ball, and throw short passes, and try to keep moving the chains. The longer they can keep the offense on the field, the less the defense will have to do.
Orton has decent arm strength. That isn't the problem though... he just has horrible accuracy outside of 20 yards. He was like the inverse of Rex as far as that went. Lazy fans and commentators just chalk it up to arm strength.
As my Dad is a Bears fan, I endured quite a few Bears games last season and the games I saw (Around five) Orton frequently struggled with getting the ball past 25 yards, let alone throwing further than 25 yards accurately.
It's not that he can't do it, it's because he has no touch at all. Hester used to get wide open deep and Orton could get it in the general vicinity, but he'd miss by several yards in front of, behind, to the left, or to the right of him. He probably could've had 4 more TDs based on that alone. He started getting better towards the end of the season but he still wasn't good.
That is if the line fits the new scheme, not only that, but teams won't fear the deep ball and stack the LOS, like what happened in Chicago.
