It's still too early to predict a winner in the battle for the starting quarterback job, but there's a sense around camp that Byron Leftwich has pulled ahead of Luke McCown and rookie Josh Freeman who is an afterthought. The team would like to keep Freeman on the bench this year and it will do so if someone can step up and lead the offense which right now looks like Leftwich who has consistently connected on downfield passes that figure to be a regular part of the offense. The team plans to give both McCown and Leftwich a start in the preseason, and that's where the tale will ultimately be told because if Leftwich can sustain his practice play, he'll open the season as the starter.

THis is quite disappointing...I was hoping for McCown or Freeman starting.

Why would you want Freeman to start? It's not like the Bucs are going to be anything. Gruden hecked you guys for a few years with his bad drafts.

I would think there wouldn't be a competition. Leftwich is the man...

    What bad drafts?

I said McCown or Freeman because the last thing I want is another situation like the Jags had, where Leftwich had the locker room but wasn't the best QB on the roster. And if leftwich or McCown aren't head & shoulders above Freeman, I say start the kid. Let him take his lumps so when it's time to really compete, he's good to go.
