If he were still in an ownership position with the 49ers, Eddie DeBartolo Jr. said he might handle the ongoing impasse with top draft pick Michael Crabtree a little differently than the team's current management group, led by his nephew and club president Jed York. "You know me, I wouldn't be pushed around by him," DeBartolo told The Chronicle. "If it keeps going a little longer, I'd tell him to go back in the draft. It's different now. These kids are looking for other people's money. I think they need Crabtree. I think they need him badly." York, who speaks to his uncle regularly, will welcome DeBartolo back to San Francisco this weekend when he becomes the first inductee into the new 49ers Hall of Fame, named after his father, Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. A red carpet event at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco will be held Saturday night, followed by a halftime ceremony on Sunday at Candlestick Park when the 49ers play the Seattle Seahawks in their home opener. I agree!! He's an arrogant pr**k and needs to be taught a lesson! Let him go back in the draft. Just another reason why there should be a rookie salary cap.
As an armchair owner it's easy to talk tough and say how this prima donna should be handled. However, Eddie's comment on how desperately the 49er's need Crabtree gives the impression he actually might have caved in. That's an awful lot of credit to be giving for player who's never played a down in the NFL.
im glad the 9ers arent caving. this is a piont where all the owners and commish and players union need to get on the same page for.
