Long snapper Brian Jennings, 36, the 49ers’ longest-tenured player who shares the franchise record for consecutive games played, was released today after 13 seasons with the team, the Sacramento Bee reported. Jenning’s spot will be assumed by Kevin McDermott, an undrafted rookie from UCLA who took 20 of the 22 snaps in the final two preseason games after he rotated with Jennings in the first two exhibition contests. The 49ers clearly knew what they had in Jennings, who has never had an errant snap in his career and earned his second Pro Bowl after the 2011 season. They wanted to see what McDermott possessed in game conditions, and he evidently passed the test. It helped McDermott’s cause that he is more than 13 years younger and about $500,000 cheaper than Jennings, who was scheduled to earn a base salary of $940,000. McDermott will earn $405,000.
