Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie announced Tuesday that coach Andy Reid will return in 2012 for his 14th season as the team's coach. "I'm here because it's been a very, very unusual season ... This was without question the most disappointing season in my tenure," Lurie said at the news conference. "After all the moves we made in the offseason and with our roster, it's extremely disappointing and unacceptable to have the season over," Lurie said. Source: ESPN
so, their 4 game winning streak to finish the season saved his fat ass? look, i've always liked Reid and respected him as an NFL head coach. I just think his time is over in Philly. How many failed seasons with a lot of talent does he need to lodge before getting the ax? So, what happens now? Reid goes 10-6 next season, wins a game or 2 in the playoffs and retains his job once again because the season was a 'success' even though they simply underachieved once again? This isn't as crazy as the Smith/Turner deal in San Diego but it's getting there.
Listen to the whole Lurie presser. He is spot on throughout the entire thing. I agree that, at this point in time, this is the best move.
Will Andy Reid ever figure out how to do a 'better job' after 14-years of coming up short? The answer, of course, is no. If anyone really believes that Reid can win a championship, they are delusional. They guy is a great preperation coach, but a craptastic gameday coach and you cannot win the Superbowl with a guy like that. I rarely agree with the people in this town, but fatty needs to go. The sad reality for Eagles fans is that if he makes the playoffs and gets ousted once again next year, he'll be rewarded with a contract extention and you'll have him for another 3 or 4 more years. Enjoy!
Who are they going to get that is better than Reid to coach this team? Reid has a history of bouncing back after a losing season. 3 times he's had a losing season, the following year he made the playoffs. There's no reason to think that they won't make the playoffs again in 2012. Maybe they get ousted short of a Championship, but at least they are getting there. There's a bunch of teams that would kill to have Reid's fat butt coaching their team. So it goes back to the original question... Who is better for the Eagles today than Reid?
Getting there isn't good enough after 14-years. It's too many NFL season to go without winning a single championship. Most fans here in Philly are sick of Reid and want to move on dispite his winning record and playoff appearances. It's simply not enough to make the playoffs a bunch of times with no hardware to show for it. And I've heard the 'who would be better' case made in support of Reid staying, but Reid was an unknown quarterbacks coach who came to the Eagles who became who is today. So I would say that there may be a number of guys out there who can be as good or possibly better than Reid if given the opportunity that Reid was once given. It's time to find out.
Answer the question? Who better than Andy Reid? If they bring in anyone else at this point we're rebuilding. This team is built to win now. The last 4 games, while against crapty teams showed this teams potential. I stand by it and will until the end. A full off season and this team is COMPLETELY different. They finally gelled together at the end and had Juan and his D had the entire off season to figure each other out this defense may have ended up completely different. Andy Reid is one of the top coaches in the NFL at this point. If he was fired right now there'd be teams LINING UP to hire him and lock him up. I'm pretty sure that only Bill Bellichek has a better record than Red. Sure, he also has rings but there's no one that I'd rather have running this team right now other than Andy.
And for the record, Id rather be a team that gets into the playoffs every season and lose than be the Cleveland Browns or the Washington Redskins. Just saying.
How long ago was that since the Eagles won their last Super Bowl? Here's a hint...think never. Reid gives them the best chance to win a Super Bowl at this time. He always has given the Eagles organization the best shot at a Championship. You gotta get to the playoffs to at least have a chance...and Reid does that many more times than he doesn't. Suggest someone who'd be better...
The coaches got way to much blame this season the eagles had the most turnover in the league the coaches are not holding the ball on the field the players are
Next year is his last year under contract. That played a huge role in them bringing him back. It will definitely be now or never for him next season.
