Hours before the NFL’s legalized tampering period opens leading into free agency, Henry Melton ensured his deal with the Bears is guaranteed for this season. Jordan Woy, Melton’s agent, announced Friday that his client accepted the franchise tag offer, meaning Melton will sign an $8.45 million, one-year contract. The 2012 Pro Bowl performer still can negotiate a multi-year deal with the team through July 15, and Woy indicated the sides would work toward that. If no long-term contract is achieved, Melton is guaranteed the $8.45 million for this season. Now, he is obligated to attend mandatory veteran minicamp because he will be under contract.
