Devin Hester on Friday downplayed his recent work with Bears defensive backs during position drills. However, he believes he could have a positive impact on a game if the situation required him to play defense. "I think so, but we're deep at DBs right now," Hester said. "We have second and third options if anything goes wrong with the guys playing now. If push comes to shove, it's fourth quarter, 2 minutes left in the game and we need to go any kind of coverage with me back there, I'll do it." Once again, trying to maximize what they're paying him at other positions even when it's been proven his 1 & only talent is returning kicks...& that's diminishing as he gets older.
Yes, the Bears did origionally draft Hester as a defensive back in 2006 but I hope it doesn't come to this the rest of the season.
why would you risk him getting injured? maybe put him in as wr again, but playing db? he is not fast enough at his age for that.
That's just what they said to the media cuz of the flak they would have gotten if they publicly said it was only for kick returns. Even back then, the media got wind of it & made a big deal of spending a 2nd round pick on a basically 1 dimensional player. He was a middle of the road CB at best in college, didn't cut it at training camp & at 31, sure isn't going to come to anything at all. He's slowed down & without Dave Toub's masterful ST work, he's probably on his last journey with the Bears.
He was useless in college as a WR, more so in the NFL. If Trestman would even consider this more than just a random play here or there, I'd seriously question his sanity & if he ever reviewed game film.
