Looking for depth at quarterback with Matt Blanchard sidelined by a broken hand, the Chicago Bears signed veteran Trent Edwards on Sunday.

Edwards, who has started 33 games over five seasons with the Buffalo Bills (2007-10), Jacksonville Jaguars (2010), Oakland Raiders (2011) and Philadelphia Eagles (2012), has experience on his side as he competes with Jordan Palmer for the No. 3 job behind Jay Cutler and Josh McCown.

On Saturday, the Bears signed Palmer -- brother of Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer -- to help fill the void created by Blanchard's injury.

It's uncertain whether the Bears will carry three quarterbacks when the regular season begins Sept. 7 against the Bengals, but Edwards and Palmer provide depth at the position for the final two preseason games.

Edwards signed a one-year contract. The Bears cleared a roster spot by waiving wide receiver Jerrell Jackson.
