Well, it appears, as usual, there will be many vacancies at head coach in the NFL after this season. Probably about 5 this time around. Here are my thoughts on the 'big names' (and a few sleepers) and whether they might be good or bad decisions:

    Good Choices:

David Shaw: Guy has a ton of experience in the NFL and has now shown a great ability to lead a group of men and manage head coaching duties. Could he be Jim Harbaugh 2.0 ? I think he's worth a shot.

Mike McCoy: Guy has played and coached in the NFL and is one of the sharpest young minds. He's only 40 years old and if successful could be with a team for many years.

Jay Gruden: Jay is intriguing to me because he progressed past the college game both as a player and coach, even though most of it was in the AFL. I believe he has some different ways of looking at things/game planning things and could bring some innovative ideas to a 'me too' league.

    Bad Choices:

Jon Gruden, Mike Holmgren, Brian Billick and Bill Cowher: Everyone knows that a SB-winning coach has never won another SB with a subsequent team. Do they lose their edge? Does the game pass them by because they don't believe they need to change? Do they demand too much power and don't do as well at their other duties? Whatever the reason, I wouldn't take the chance if the goal is to win it all. If the goal of a team is just to ressurect a failing organization, then these men would be good choices but these coaches probably would not take those types of jobs.

Any college coach with the last name of Kelly: Chip and Brian are already hot names for NFL h.c. positions and both would be a big mistake. Neither has ANY experience in the big boy league, either as a player or assistant. Both of these situations would be epic fails.

Andy Reid: This guy needs a break. He has had way too many struggles/stresses, not only with the Eagles, but in his personal life. He needs to take a page from Jeff Fisher and take a year or more off to re-group. If he jumps right into another situation, I think he's going to continue making the same mistakes.

Others to discuss: Perry Fewell, Ray Horton, Bill O'Brien, Mike Zimmer, Gus Bradley, Bruce Arians, Vic Fangio, many more.

I'm not so certain that Chip Kelly would be an epic fail. I think the same was said for Jimmy Johnson, and look what he did, given time.

anything is possible i suppose but j.j. was 25 years ago in a different era/different time. i think the differences in the 2 jobs (college h.c. vs. nfl h.c.) has widened greatly since then. no nfl head coach has had success without fairly extensive experience as a player or coach since that time. they're just very different jobs.

I'm on the fence with Chip. I think he could really go either way. He doesn't really run a pro-style anything with the Ducks but the man is very smart so who knows.

And you are spot on with Andy Reid. 2014 Andy Reid I think will be an amazing Cleveland Browns head coach.

Vic Fangio is still coaching? Crap he was on Jim Mora's Saints coaching staff in the mid 80's. and he was old then.

yep, that's the knock on the 'old' guys still in the league like arians, fangio, lebeau, etc. ................

even if maybe they could be given a chance or another chance at h.c., many organizations would not hire them because you may not be able to build something for 'years' ............ and i can understand that point of view.

but he does know defense though. sometimes the oldtimers can make crap work better.

1 and a half years in i am really liking him. i dont want him to leave but the way the niners are looking with their outstanding run game and making alex look like a nfl QB i think he will leave. someone is going to snatch him up. i question his playcalling sometimes but when he doesnt try to be cute he does a real nice job

well, he's young enough and has a ton of nfl experience to possibly be a good candidate.

that is how most coaches who try to out think themselves with their playcalling does. try to get too fancy and it generally backfires. glad you didn't put Payton's name on the best hires list. other than that all our good young coaches are already gone to other teams. one good thing about having older coaches. other teams generally leave them alone.

If notre dame wins it all,i expect for a few nfl teams to go after him in the off season. all the guy does is win wherever he goes.

well, we know kelly can flat out coach/recruit in the college game ........... we have no idea if he can translate to the big boy league ............ i personally wouldn't bet on it but maybe someone will give him a shot so we can see.

Jets will probably 86 Ryan, bring in Chip Kelly, cut/trade Sanchez, and run the Oregon super spread with Tebow. It'll be awesome.

ferentz's name comes up every year but he isn't leaving Iowa. he has almost a lifetime contract at Iowa for $4 mill a year. why bother?
