Bills DE Mario Williams underwent a procedure on his left wrist, head coach Chan Gailey confirmed Wednesday.

“The update on Mario is he had a procedure done to relieve some discomfort in his wrist and we expect him back for practice this week,†Gailey said. “That’s all I know at this point."

Williams, who signed a six-year contract worth as much as $100 million with the Bills in March, has only 3½ sacks this season and has been open about discussing the nagging wrist injury affecting his production. The team has downplayed the injury, to the point where it was fined $20,000 by the league for violating the injury-reporting policy after not listing Williams on its injury report.

“They told me what happened and said he’ll be ready next week,†Gailey said. “He’ll be at practice next week. That’s what I understand. That’s what I was told.â€
