The Buffalo Bills have announced that rookie E.J. Manuel will start the season opener, just weeks after undergoing minor knee surgery. The Bills play host to the New England Patriots Sunday.

Undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel was on standby and would have gotten the nod from coach Doug Marrone if Manuel had not made a speedy recovery.

Instead, Manuel, who impressed in his start in the first preseason game of the year, has made enough progress to make Marrone feel comfortable about putting the ball in Manuel's hands.
