Give him the best team in the conference and a hall of fame quarterback, and Brad Childress sure can coach. That's what his detractors will say to the news that Childress has received a contract extension through 2013 from Zygi Wilf and the entire Wilf family. And there's no question that Childress has his detractors. Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press
How many people questioned the ability of this hall of fame QB when he was signed? What this season says to me is give Childress a capable QB on this team and he's good coach and deserves an extension IMO. That being said Minnesota has Favre for next season...maybe. Childress needs to figure out his QB of the future in a hurry or the Vikings will regress and be in their same old situation.
I would have liked to see them wait until the off season before signing him to an extension, but I won't go so far as to say it was a bad move. What scares me most is that he was supposed to be this genius at grooming qb's, but he hasn't had any luck in that department since signing with the team. The front office has done a very good job (with his input I'm sure) at signing some good to excellent free agents. But it all would have gone for naught so far, had they not been able to get Favre. Because he's screwed up every pick at QB since joining the team 4 years ago. In the mean time, I'm just going to enjoy this year for whatever it brings, and hope that they can actually draft our qb of the future in next years draft.
I really don't think he deserves it. I like some of the things he has done, his meeting with Percy Harvin and deciding to draft him for example. He also traded up to draft Tarvaris Jackson, and invested (wasted) so much time on him, we know how that has worked out so far.... People talk about how his record has improved by two wins every year he has been head coach. Much of that has been due to us adding talent every year. 6-10 his first year, we draft Adrian Peterson, move to 8-8. 2008 we trade for Jared Allen and move to 10-6. This year of course, we have Brett Favre and are looking like we should easily be 12-4 or better. I doubt there is a coach out there who wouldn't love to have this talent, and if Childress walked at the end of his current contract, where would he go? Raiders, Browns, or whatever team is struggling at the time. Probably wouldn't be to hard to give him the extension as his current contract was expiring.
QB's don't work out all the time, its one player...he missed on Jackson, definitely but that shouldn't define his time as a head coach
I hear you harvs, but I think it's been more than that. He missed on Jackson, he missed on JDB, he misjudged Thigpen. I know a lot of teams have QB issues, but for someone who was billed as being good at developing QB's, he hasn't impressed me yet. Obviously, that's just one piece of the puzzle though. I am glad to have some stability at the coaching position, and I hope that he continues to improve his coaching and leadership skills. I can't argue with the results of how things are going now that he's got a qb that's good in the west coast offense.
