The Broncos cut second-year veteran CB Jack Williams to clear a spot for Ty Law on Nov. 6, but we hear the signing of the 35-year-old Law was also an indictment of rookie CB Alphonso Smith's play. For him to immediately lose his nickel back job to Law, a 15th-year veteran who had been considering retirement after not even participating in an NFL training camp, is not the early return the Broncos expected when they made the investment in Smith. It's true that Smith has been bothered by an ankle injury and he still has time to develop into a dependable player, but he has not taken advantage of opportunities on "D" and has also fallen down the depth chart at punt returner, which is a job he was supposed to fill heading into the season.
