CBSSports.com NFL Blogger Will Brinson asked Buccaneers running back LeGarrette Blount his thoughts on if the team drafted Alabama running back Trent Richardson. Blount was less than complimentary. "I would not like that pick," Blount said while at Nike's unveiling of the new NFL uniforms in New York City. "I would definitely not be happy with that pick." Blount added that he would prefer to be a featured back and not a goal-line back like Brandon Jacobs. Blount's comments come on the heels of Greg Schiano telling CBSSports.com that while he thinks Blount is talented he also insinuated that he might have a fumbling issue.

Haha, scared for his job, and he should be. Despite the opinion of mush and others that no RB is worthy of a high pick, Richardson is an absolute stud and way more prepared to be a complete feature back than a guy like Blount-smoker

Yea I'd take Richardson over Blount 100 times out of 100. Blount fumbles way to much and Richardson its a beast.

If a back can have the impact of AD, then he is worth a top 5 pick. Richardson isn't the same type back, but he can have the same impact

you know, people are still trying to view the 2012 running back position the same as it was in 1992 and it just isn't.

In 1992, teams aimed to have a stud ball carrier and then a couple of situational backs (short yardage and long 3rd down). With the evolution of the game over the last 20 years, the running game isn't as prevalent and teams don't build their backfields this way. most teams have learned that situational backs aren't worth the roster spot because when injuries happen, it destroys their running game because you can't plug one guy in for the other.

Teams have learned that it is better to have 2 or 3 'good' complete, versatile backs that each can do everything they need them to do and can be rotated in and out to keep their legs fresh and if an injury happens, they aren't dead in that particular aspect of their running game. In addition, the fact that the passing game now sets up the running game in this league makes it easier for a back to be plugged into a running game.

And this is why the salaries for running backs haven't been increasing at the same rate as other positions in the league. They are now viewed as a complementary piece of the offense and teams view the strength of their backfield as a 'group' of players instead of individuals.
