The Bucs have been near the top of the league in terms of salary cap space this season, back in September, ESPN reported that the Bucs had $27.2 million in cap space, a number that likely hasn't significantly changed. That ranked them second in the league, the Bucs had all of this cap space, but didn't use it on the deepest free agency class in NFL history. They didn't use it to extend their own players, either, although there haven't exactly been many candidates for extension this season. Keeping all of that in mind, the Bucs will have even more cap space next season. Per Andrew Brandt of the National Football Post, they will work with a salary cap close to $150 million, as the $25 million of 2011 cap space rolls over to next season, with a reported salary cap number of $92.873 million in 2012 (per ESPN), the Bucs will have nearly $55 million in salary cap space.

no wonder they have a hard time winning consistently . pretty soon they will be so far under the cap they won't have a payroll at all.

well, some teams are enjoying this in-between period of CBA's to carry a very low payroll. The new CBA has floor requirements that teams will HAVE to spend a certain amount of money each year, so this will not last forever.

it's my understanding that every team will need to be at 95% of the cap number and actually spend 89% of the cap number in real dollars.

Now, this article mentions that any gap in what they spend rolls over to the next seasons cap requirements. I didn't know that part of it. If that is true, then the Bucs 'floor' (what they must spend) is about $140 million ? i don't think that's accurate.

Haven't they been stupidly low on the payroll for quite a couple of years now?

Yes, last year was uncapped and this year had no floor so teams like the Bucs, Bills, Jags, Chiefs (small market teams) have carried VERY low payrolls while they can.

they still won't spend the money the right way. I see the Bucs as the Saints were back in the late 90's and early 2000's. Spending just enough money to field a team that gets a few wins. Just enough wins to tantalize their fans to buy season tickets.
