Whoever starts at quarterback next season for the Cardinals — and there’s a chance he isn’t on the roster yet — new head coach Bruce Arians said the player will have "grit," Bob McManaman of the Arizona Republic reports. “When you go out and evaluate quarterbacks,†Arians said Friday during his introductory new conference, “you can look at arm strength, you can look at accuracy, you can look at height, weight speed — all the things that are coming up with these young quarterbacks — but you truly can’t measure two muscles, the brain and the heart, and that’s what separates them. “That’s the grit. When they step in the huddle, the other 10 guys, whatever comes out of his mouth, they believe it’s going to work. That doesn’t mean he’s the most talented player in the world, but he has that leadership, grit, that he’s going to do whatever it takes for his football team. It means he’s tough as nails and guys will follow him into a fire. That’s what you’re looking for. That’s grit.†Known as a quarterback guru who helped develop Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and Andrew Luck this past season with the Colts, Arians plans to soon begin evaluating Kevin Kolb, John Skelton and Ryan Lindley. If he doesn’t think any of them are “salvageable,†he said, “We’ll see if there’s a better option at Door Number 2.†As for Kolb, who is due a $9 million roster bonus a month before the April 25-27 NFL draft and is viewed as the team’s most viable in-house candidate, Arians had some interesting comments. “If he’s our guy, he’ll be a better player, I promise you that,†Arians said. “If not, we’re going to have a better option. … I’ve seen Kevin, and he’s had his moments. He’s also had his not-so-good moments, but he’s also had the crap knocked out of him a few times. “I came with no preconceived notions about the quarterbacks who are here. I’m going to give them all a shot.†Source: The Redzone
Re: Cardinals Coach Bruce Arians Wants A QB With ‘Grit,’ Leadership He's a lot better than what they have.
i think anymore if a team doesn't have a sure-fire stud qb, they need a couple of options to see if one will take the reigns. even if the cards want to give kolb another shot, they need to draft someone pretty high and let the best man win.
well, they could even grab a guy in the 2nd or 3rd round that has potential like a russell wilson/kirk cousins/nick foles-type pick and see if he can beat out kolb. that way, if he ends up being just a back-up, they don't waste a high first rounder on him.
Now that's a more sound plan for this draft. They need an impact player who can contribute ASAP with that top pick and I just don't see any of the current 'top' guys being able to come in and cement their role as the starter for week one.
yep, they need to draft a stud o-lineman with their first pick. really, they are not very far off from putting it together. if they can get their o-line together and get good QB play, they would be a formidable opponent.
Matt Moore and Jason Campbell are both free agents if not mistaken. Both these guys could be serviceable for a year or more till they could draft someone. Moore is younger and I think could learn a lot from Arians. That is if he doesn't think Kolb or Skeltons the answer.
There is no chance that the QB Arians is speaking about will be had with the Cards' first pick. From now until the draft I will have Chance Warmack (OG) as our No. 1 and then QB's Tyler Wilson or Mike Glannon in the 2nd as Arians potential Mr. True Grit simply because they can launch it downfield. There isn't one QB in this year's draft that even remotely comes close to a Manning, Roethlisberger or Luck when they were rookies. (Count your blessings Bruce.) The three QB's that Arians has worked with are all grit but would never be upright with the Cards current O-Line. QB at No. 1 is not an option.
