Joe Reitz would like to make one thing absolutely clear: He can dunk. One of the lighter moments of the Ravens' 17-12 win against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night occurred late in the third quarter after third-string quarterback Troy Smith scored a touchdown on an 8-yard scamper. "I was running up there so that he could jump into my arms and I could hoist him up," Reitz recalled. "But he gave me the ball, and I was standing there." What happened next was laughworthy: the 6-foot-7 Reitz, a former basketball player who ended his career at Western Michigan University ranked third on the school's all-time scoring list, tried to dunk the football over the crossbar, but the crossbar blocked his attempt. "I tried to get a lift, but with the pads and after that long drive, I didn't quite make it over the crossbar," Reitz said. "Being a former college basketball player, I know that I probably got 20 texts from all my old teammates. They're probably just killing me right now. They're probably texting me and saying, 'You just furthered the stereotype that white men can't jump,' " Reitz continued. "But I was happy that we scored the touchdown. Troy made a great play on the run. I just wanted to go there and celebrate with him and have a good time." Although coach John Harbaugh said he didn't see Reitz's foible, he still had a comment on it. "He should be making dunks of all people, right?" Harbaugh joked. "Basketball? Obviously, he was boxing people out in his college career and not scoring." Reitz pointed out that the water absorbed by his pads and the fact that he is no longer 250 pounds â€“ he's listed at 320 pounds now â€“ may have played a role. "But I want to go on the record and say that I could dunk in college, and I did dunk even though I embarrassed myself a little bit out there tonight," he said.
