Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips has avoided having to defend himself in a court trial next week by reaching a conditional settlement with a man who sued him for allegedly punching him in the face in April 2009. The trial had been set for next week and possibly could have interrupted his preparation for the Chargers' Oct. 10 game at Oakland. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, a 54-year-old woman, Lourdes Jaross, recently sought a $600,000 settlement from Phillips in a different civil suit against him, according to court documents. In the San Diego case, Phillips, 29, initially was cited for misdemeanor battery after allegedly punching a security guard at the Ivy Hotel.
