Running back Darren Sproles has been an electric performer for the better part of his first five NFL seasons in San Diego, but that won't keep the Chargers from pulling the plug on his tenure with the team when the lockout officially ends. The San Diego Union-Tribune, via a user mailbag, reports the Chargers "could keep him, but they aren't planning on it." The main reason is that he will be too expensive to keep. Sproles made $7.2 million last season after signing a one-year tender, but as a pending free agent, he's not expected to return to a crowded backfield that includes 2010 first-rounder Ryan Mathews and two surprising fullback-type hybrids, Mike Tolbert and Jacob Hester. A cheaper replacement can be found in this week's NFL draft in similar players, such as Troy's Jerrel Jernigan and Oregon State's Jacquizz Rodgers. Source: Philly.com
He hasn't been that great the last couple of years, he'd have a few nice plays and would still be a weapon but definitely not worth the $7 million a year.
