Chiefs QB Alex Smith Says Team Is Trying To Win "Right Now"

The Kansas City Chiefs are the perfect example to show how the NFL in 2012 is a "win now" league. They were expected to compete for the AFC West division title last year and they bottomed out and the staff was fully replaced.

And now the Chiefs will be expected to win again.

The arrival of coach Andy Reid and a slew of smart free-agent pickups should have the Chiefs optimistic. We're not saying they're Super Bowl contenders, but there's no reason to think the Chiefs can't bounce back from 2-14 to, say, 8-8 or better, quarterback Alex Smith knows this well.

"I think that's the case for every NFL team, and if it's not the case, it's a problem. We're trying to win right now. I think that's the great thing about the NFL," Smith said via SBNation.com. "You're out there and there are very few perennials. It's a battle every single year. You can go first to worst, worst to first. There is so much parity across the league. That's the mindset here, that's for sure. If it's not win now, then that's a problem."

49ers were 20-6 in games alex started and finished.

So its not like its impossible to win with Alex.

So terrible coaching doesn't come into play? or lack of weapons.

Team game and our team wasnt very good under those other regimes. you also forget that he was gone for an entire year and we were still terrible. Vernon Davis with anyone else but Alex throwing to him is mediocre. Case in point 2009. With Shaun Hill as QB for 6 games VD had 3 touchdowns. Then Alex came in and in the final 10 games Vernon had 10 more TDs to tie the TE Td record. Under Shaun Hill he had 52 yards a game in those final 10.5 games he had around 70 yards per game. This year 5 Tds with Alex in 8 games and 2 with Kaepernick in 11.

So does Vernon suck because he has crappy stats with Kaepernick? Or is it maybe a bit more complex than oh god Alex was terrible his first year so he must always suck.

I didn't realize he was actually decent at times.

He was more than decent a lot of times but people can only bring up crap from 4 years ago because you know a player can never get better if they werent good 6 years ago no way they can be good now.

People just dont want to admit they might have been wrong about alex.

He had one of the best games ever when he went 18/19 for 232 yards and 3 tds.
Threw for 300 and ran for 50 against the bills when they became the only team to run for 300 and pass for 300 in NFL history.
The game winning drive against the saints.
    Game winning pass against Det
Something like 6 4th quarter comebacks last year.

    Yep terrible player.

Your love for Smith borders along the line of an almost homo love fest dude. You defend the guy with bloated stats like you have his baby. It's really weird.

Nothing I haven't heard before. The guy gets a lot of crap and I am defending him. I am a fan of his and I like to educate the haters.

Why is that when people defend a player and its against the status quo is it a homo love fest? So because I like Alex as a player and can use stats to prove my point thats makes me gay and in love with him? Right..........

Anyways get back at me with some real stats that show hes terrible and please try to make it something that's happened in the last few years because using his rookie year and when he was hurt is just sad. Anyways like always I look forward to some real stats that prove he is terrible but like everyone else you will just say he just sucks or go back to the well you're in love with him crap.

Look at his stats before the year before last and those are horrible stats. And saying oh well he didn't have this and that, are EXCUSES, the some thing you called people out for saying about Cutler and other QBs. Which is why using only stats is what simple ball watchers use to argue a point, and using only stats is building a house with only drywall, no real foundation.

He had zero 4th quarter comebacks last year, and the fact that the team was still crap in his absences (not worse, just still crapty) hecks your argument all off, because either that means he was either just about as good and as important to the teams success as Shaun Hill or JTOSullivan, or that Shaun Hill and JTO were also actually really good quarterbacks who suffered from a bad surrounding cast and crap coaching and would be good elsewhere...which didn't turn out to be the case.

Okay lets do this your way and cherrypick some crap.

Misfitz just dont want to admit he might have been wrong about alex.

He had one of the worst games ever when he went for just 200 yards and 3 picks against the reigning champs in what was supposed to be a revenge game for the NFCCG.
In 28 games since 2011 (since thats apparently when he started playing football), has only thrown for over 300 yds once.
The season ending game against the Giants.
Game winning pass against Det that he wouldnt have had to throw if he hadn't been utter garbage the entire game up to that drive, throwing for under 100 yds and a pick.
Something like (actually, EXACTLY like) zero 4th quarter comebacks last year.
2-27-1 lifetime against opponents that score over 24.

    Yep terrible player.
