ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reports there is belief around the league that Colts head coach Jim Caldwell is on the hot seat this year. "You talk to people around the league," said Schefter, and "they think Caldwell could be in trouble after this year." Caldwell is supposed to be an offensive mind, but it took him an 0-3 start and an injury to pull the rug from beneath Kerry Collins. The usage of Dallas Clark seems like it was conceived by a Pop Warner-level game planner. It's clear by now that Peyton Manning not only "made" the Colts' team, he's been largely the basis for Tony Dungy, Bill Polian, and Caldwell's success in Indianapolis. Howard Mudd isn't exactly fielding a strong offensive line in Philadelphia, either. Source: NFL Huddle: Twitter.com
I understand this. I mean he took over a team with the pieces in place for the most part and when one ends up missing he can't find a way to win. To be a successful coach you must be able to find a way to win when someone goes down. I know Peyton is the leader and star of this team, but it takes more than one to win. Bringing in Collins was dumb, I would have spent my money on someone else!
Caldwell has made some dumb butt decisions/moves even before Manning got hurt and I think most Colts fans I talk to would agree he needs to go.
I think we all knew Caldwell only got the job because Dungy handpicked him to be his successor. I don't think this 0-5 start discredits anything Dungy did, but I do think it shows that Caldwell is merely a stand-in.
I honestly don't think any coach could be expected to do much better in the position Caldwell was in, most of that however is due to the fact that he signed Kerry Collins he could have tried to wrestle Carson out of Cincy or gone for any number of other options at QB but he chose Kerry Collins?? Taht still confuses me. He should take the fall for his decisions but I don't think with this team anyone would be any better.
Caldwell sucks. He is a below average coach and Peyton's injury proved what they are left without him- a below average coach and a team with a bad o.line, an aging Wayne and a bunch of nobodies
The team would not be winless if Kerry Collins where not for some obscenely goobered reason choosen as the back up plan...WHY?
Ya but Peyton Manning is one of the greatest qbs of all time. I think him being out exposed the Colts. Even with a pretty good qb theyre not THAT great of a team.
I agree, but Cadwell hasn't done anything to change that fact over the years since he took over. Like I said, he took over a team and left it at that. Not a good coach IMO
