The Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones acknowledge for the first time that Jay Ratliff may not be able to open the regular season in two weeks.

Ratliff has not taken part in any team drills with the Cowboys in nearly 10 months. While he currently sits on the team’s physically unable to perform list, club officials have continually expressed the belief that he would be on the field against the New York Giants on Sept. 8.

But Jones said Saturday evening that Ratliff will not practice next week and conceded he had no idea if the defensive tackle would be able to return to the practice field prior to the opener.

“We’re not ready, and he’s not ready, at this juncture to get out there,’’ Jones said. “We are having to really feel our way. We’ve got to keep an eye on his strength as far as coming out too early.’’
